2026 China University Application Timeline
A simple month-by-month guide based on 5,000 real student journeys.
Autumn / Year 1
Phase 1: Build Your Foundation
Research (Sept - Oct): Choose 10 to 15 target universities. Check their official websites for deadlines. Look at the majors they offer. Maybe also check our AI Assistant for school recommendation.
Check Your Passport: Make sure your passport is valid for at least 18 months. You will need a valid passport to apply for a visa later.
Self-Assessment: Evaluate your grades and language skills. Decide if you want an English-taught program or a Chinese-taught program.
Document Prep (Nov): Ask your teachers for recommendation letters early. Start writing your personal statement. Translate your transcripts into English or Chinese. Don't know how to write them? Check here.
CSCA Exam (Dec): Take the first round of the CSCA exam. A high score in December gives you a big advantage for early scholarships.

Phase 2: Peak Application Season
Submit Early (Jan - Feb): Apply to top universities like Tsinghua, Peking, and SJTU. Their seats fill up very fast. Do not wait until the deadline. For more detailed deadlines, please check here.
Apply for Scholarships: Create an account on the CSC scholarship portal. Apply for Type A through your embassy and Type B through the university. Check here if you know nothing about scholarships.
Pay Application Fees: Pay the university application fees on time. Keep your payment receipts safe.
CSCA Retake (March): Take the exam again if you want a higher score. This is your last chance before the main intake closes.

Spring / Year 2
Phase 3: Wait for Results
Interviews (April - May): Prepare for video interviews with university professors. Practice answering basic questions about your major and your study plans.
Check Your Status: Log into your university portals every week. Check if they need more documents from you.
Conditional Offers: You might get an offer that requires a final GPA or a seat deposit. Pay the deposit quickly to secure your admission.
Physical Exam: Go to a public hospital. Complete your foreigner physical examination form. You need this paper for your student visa.
Summer / Year 2
Phase 4: Visa and Departure
JW202 Form (July): Wait for your official admission package and your JW202 form in the mail. You must have these original papers for the embassy.
Visa Application (August): Take your documents to the Chinese embassy. Apply for the X1 student visa.
Book Flights and Dorms: Book your flight only after you get your visa. Apply for on-campus dormitories as early as possible.
Digital Setup: Download essential apps before you arrive in China. You will need WeChat for communication and Alipay for payments.
Final Tips from Our Alumni
Applying to China takes time. Follow these simple rules to succeed:
- Apply Before March: 70% of full scholarships go to students who apply early.
- Check Your Email Daily: Look in your spam folder. Admissions officers will reject you if you reply too late.
- Have a Backup Plan: Always apply to at least one backup university in a smaller city or with higher admitted chances.
- Prepare Documents Early: Finish all translations and notarizations before January. This saves you a lot of stress.
