University Entrance Exams in China (2026): The Complete Guide

Imagine that you have passed CSCA with a high score and you thought that everything's fine now.

Three days later, you receive an email: "Please login to the system next Tuesday for the mathematics examination."

This is where 40% of qualified students fail (sometimes even 90%). For Tier 2 universities, admission is based on documents. But for the C9 League and Project 985 universities, the Entrance Exam (入学考试) is the real filter. It is harder than your high school finals, and it is strictly monitored.

1. CSCA is NOT Entrance Exams

Before we look at the questions, you must understand the system.

  • Entrance Exam: A specific admission test organized by one university for their applicants. Passing CSCA does not mean you pass the Entrance Exam. The Entrance Exam is specific, technical, and sometimes high-pressure.

2. Confirmed Exam Formats (2025 Data)

These universities have established, predictable exam patterns. Prepare for these specifically.

Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen (HITSZ)
Status: CONFIRMED

Format: Online written test. Extremely strict timing.

Mathematics Section:
• 25 Multiple Choice Questions.
• 5 Fill-in-the-blank Questions (These require calculation).
Key Topics: Functions, Derivatives, Integrals, Vectors, Logarithms.

Physics Section:
• 6 Multiple Choice Questions.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU)

Professors will ask you to set up your camera so they can see you in person. They might verbally give you a math or physics problem.

Sample Task: "Draw the graph of y = ln(x) and explain its derivative."

Objective: They test your ability to explain complex logic in English (or Chinese) under pressure.

South China University of Technology (SCUT)
Status: LIKELY

Format: Combined Assessment.

SCUT often combines Math, Physics, and English into a single session. The questions focus more on logic and speed rather than deep, multi-page calculations. English proficiency in scientific terminology (e.g., knowing what "Velocity" or "Integer" means) is crucial.

3. SUSTech & Others

Information for these universities is harder to track because they change formats yearly. However, community reports suggest they are extremely difficult.

  • Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech):
    SUSTech models itself after top global research universities. Expect a Full Written Exam (Math + Physics) followed by an English interview. The difficulty level is comparable to Gaokao (hard mode, approximately 90% elimination rate!). Do not apply here as a "Safety School".
  • Tsinghua University:
    Undergraduate admission involves a series of tests. Math and Physics are mandatory for engineering. The difficulty is hard.
  • Tongji University:
    For Architecture/Design majors: Portfolio review + Live Sketching test.
    For Engineering: Math/Physics written test is common.
  • Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT):
    Reports indicate online interviews that include technical questions (Math/Physics) without a prior written exam.

4. Preparation Strategy

1. Review High School Calculus:
Most international curriculums cover basic Calculus. Chinese exams require advanced understanding. Focus on Derivatives and Integrals.

2. Practice Without a Calculator:
Calculators are banned in 90% of entrance exams. You must be able to do arithmetic (e.g., 25 x 14) on paper quickly.

3. Learn the Vocabulary:
Even if the exam is in English, you must know the terms. Do you know what "Derivative", "Isosceles Triangle", or "Kinetic Energy" means in English? If you stumble on the word, you lose time.
