Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)

This is the most famous scholarship. It has two main application tracks:

• Type A (Embassy Track): You apply through the Chinese Embassy in your home country. You should contact the university first to get a Pre-admission Letter. This letter heavily increases your chances of success.
• Type B (University Track): You apply directly to the university. Competition is fierce here, especially for STEM students applying to top universities.

Local Government Scholarships

Do not ignore provincial and city scholarships. Cities like Shanghai and Beijing manage massive funds.

• These scholarships are often friendlier to English-taught majors than the CSC Type A.
• A Shanghai Government Scholarship Class A provides the exact same full coverage as the CSC scholarship.

University Presidential Scholarships

Universities offer these merit-based funds to attract top international talent. These scholarships have separate deadlines. You must check the university website carefully.

Step 1: Search and Target (Dec - Jan)

Do not rely on Wikipedia. Visit the specific website of the university International Student Office. Pick three universities: one dream school, one target school, and one safety school. Do not pay an agent to do this research. Agents often direct students to low-tier universities that pay them commissions.

Step 2: Double Application (Jan - March)

Many students make a critical mistake here. For a CSC Type B scholarship, you must submit two separate applications. First, you register on the CSC Portal to generate your serial number. Second, you submit an application on the university admission system. If you miss either step, the university will reject your application.

Step 3: CSCA Exam (March - April)

Leading universities no longer blindly accept high school grades. They now require the CSCA Entrance Exam. Universities use CSCA scores as a strict filter. If you score below 60 out of 100 in Math or Physics, you will likely lose your chance for a full scholarship.

Step 4: The Interview (April - May)

If you pass the written test, the university will invite you to a video interview. Professors usually ask you to solve math or physics problems live on camera. They rarely allow calculators during this stage.
