The Ultimate Breakdown: CSCA Math Syllabus 2026 & Key Topics Explained

So, you are applying to top Chinese universities for 2026 admission. You know you have to take the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment), and if you are applying for Engineering, Medicine, or Science, the Mathematics section is likely your biggest stressor.

Based on the latest 2025/2026 syllabus updates and real exam trends, this guide will break down exactly what you need to study.

Is the CSCA Math Exam Hard?

Before we look at the syllabus, let's answer the most common question: "How hard is it?"

VS. SAT MATH
Significantly Harder. It requires deeper conceptual understanding and more complex calculation steps than the SAT.
VS. IB/A-LEVEL
Comparable Difficulty, Different Style. The difficulty is similar to IB Math AA HL, but the CSCA focuses heavily on calculation speed and "tricky" algebraic manipulations.
VS. GAOKAO
Slightly Easier. It follows the same logical structure as the Chinese domestic Gaokao but is generally less punishing.

⚠️ The Golden Rule: Calculators are prohibited. Your mental math must be sharp.

The 5 Core Modules

1. Algebra & Functions

The heavyweight champion. If you master this, you pass.

  • Sets & Logic (Sufficiency/Necessity)
  • Domain, Range, Monotonicity, Parity
  • Logarithmic & Exponential Functions
  • Arithmetic & Geometric Sequences
2. Trigonometry

Pure memorization and application.

  • Identities (sin² + cos² = 1)
  • Sum/Difference Formulas (sin(α±β))
  • Law of Sines & Cosines
  • Graph transformations (Amplitude, Period)
3. Vectors & Geometry

Spatial reasoning required.

  • Vector Dot Product & Coordinates
  • Lines & Circles Equations
  • Conic Sections (Ellipse, Hyperbola)
4. Solid Geometry & Prob

Visualizing 3D shapes.

  • Surface Area & Volume (Cones, Spheres)
  • Line/Plane Relationships
  • Classical Probability Models

What are the Key Topics?

CRITICAL Inequalities

Based on our student data, this is where most international students lose points. The CSCA loves converting geometry or function problems into complex inequalities.

What to study specifically:

  • Absolute Value: Standard form |ax+b| < c and geometric interpretation.
  • Parameter Problems: "Find the range of m such that..." (Requires discriminant analysis).
  • Trig Inequalities: Combining unit circle logic with inequalities (e.g., 2sin(2x) ≥ 1).

How to Prepare?

Step 1: Memorize the Formula Sheet

Since calculators are banned, you cannot rely on a data booklet. You must memorize Trigonometric identities, Volume formulas, and Conic Section equations.

Step 2: Practice "Type-B" Questions

The CSCA doesn't just ask "solve for x". It asks conceptual questions like "Which statement is sufficient to prove...". You need high-quality mock tests that reflect this specific phrasing.

Step 3: Speed Training

You have limited time. Spend no more than 2-3 minutes on multiple-choice questions. If you get stuck on a parameter inequality, skip it.
