At CrosslineEdu, we manage a community of over 5,000 international students. We analyzed the past 6 months' data to determine which universities are generating the most interest.

Here are the Top 10 Most Discussed Chinese Universities for 2026.

Key Insight Most applicants are concerned about math entrance exams and scholarship quotas. If you are applying to these schools, you will need to take the CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment). The only exception is Shenzhen University (only for now).

1

Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT)

#1 Popularity Engineering Harbin & Shenzhen

Why it is #1: HIT is the absolute outlier in our data, especially for undergraduate applicants. It has nearly double the mention volume of other universities.

Note: Our data shows that when students discuss HIT, they are frequently referring to the HIT Shenzhen Campus as well as the main campus in Harbin. The Shenzhen campus is particularly favored for its proximity to tech giants as well as huge amount of international new intakes yearly (about 1,000+ in 25/26 application year).

"Common Topic: Generous engineering scholarships and the choice between Harbin (Snow) vs. Shenzhen (Tech Hub)."

Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT)

Beijing Science & Tech CSC Type B

Why it is #2: BIT remains a solid choice in Beijing. It is known for being international-student friendly and offers a wide range of English-taught programs in Computer Science.

"Common Topic: The interview process structure and the probability of securing the CSC Type B scholarship."
3

Zhejiang University (ZJU)

C9 League Hangzhou High Ranking

Why it is #3: Located in Hangzhou, ZJU is a top-tier C9 university. The competition is intense, driving high discussion volume. ZJU also has its own International School, hence drawing more attention from applicants.

"Common Topic: ZJU does not take CSCA that seriously in year 1, making it a 'safe haven' for many applicants fear of CSCA."

4

Tsinghua University

#1 in China Elite Highly Competitive

Why it is #4: While it is the dream school for many, it ranks #4 in discussion volume simply because many students feel it is out of reach (and, unfortunately, it is truly out of reach for many).

"Common Topic: Extremely high GPA requirements and challenging interview questions."
5

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU)

Shanghai C9 League CSCA Required

Why it is #5: SJTU is a primary target for students wishing to live in Shanghai. It is renowned for Medicine and Engineering.

"Common Topic: Strict CSCA exam score requirements. Without strong math/physics scores, scholarship chances are low."
6

Fudan University

Shanghai Business & Arts Entrance Exam

Why it is #6: Another Shanghai giant. Applicants often compare Fudan directly with SJTU.

"Common Topic: Fudan treats CSCA very seriously, with multiple cases of rejection simply because of CSCA score lower than 60."
7

Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech)

Rising Star Shenzhen English Friendly

Why it is #7: SUSTech is the 'Dark Horse' of the 2026 application season. Located in Shenzhen, it is rapidly climbing the rankings and it is also unique in many ways.

"Common Topic: Excellent facilities and a fully English-taught environment. It is becoming a top alternative to traditional C9 schools. However, its entrance exam is truly challenging, with more than 90% of elimination rate."
8

Shenzhen University (SZU)

Shenzhen Modern Location

Why it is #8: Similar to SUSTech, SZU is gaining popularity due to its location. Students are prioritizing proximity to tech companies like Tencent and DJI.

"Common Topic: Modern campus life and internship opportunities in the Greater Bay Area. Also because it does not require CSCA this year."
9

Peking University (PKU)

Beijing Top 2 Highly Competitive

Why it is #9: PKU is prestigious, but the application threshold is exceptionally high. It is discussed less frequently because the pool of qualified applicants is smaller.

"Common Topic: Acceptance rates and strict GPA cut-offs."
10

Tongji University

Shanghai Architecture Engineering

Why it is #10: A powerhouse in Shanghai, particularly famous for Architecture and Civil Engineering programs.

"Common Topic: A reliable target school for engineering students wishing to study in Shanghai."
